Thanks Stevo for the nice image!
We thought we will use the convention Google has created with there tiny "LIST" Button near the map buttons. Maybe not the best idea. As soon as we are including the port info and another (still secret) feauture in to the app, we will have to restructure the menues a bit.
The idea of storing the zoom-level and the last monitored position is on our feature list now :-)

V1.1 is looking good.
Faster upload of vessels, I love to see all vessels into a list.
But, it's a small screen with small buttons,, you could put the list of vessels under the Spotter-button.

Isn't it possible to choose a zoomlevel??

<em>Jose Amaro from Lisboa, Portugal: </em>

Tear down The Wall !Outside The Wall.
All alone, or in twos
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
Some gathered together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers' Wall

Roger Waters 10 years after the fall of the wall he sangs and I heard:
<strong>"Tear down The Wall !"</strong>

Freedom Ever!
sleep well... see you tomorrow

Just put my 10 favourite vessels on the list. (would like to put some more, but 10 is fine)
I think this feature is really sensational and gives a great overview of the ship positions.
I was looking forward to the start of this option and it was worth waiting. The vessel list feature is much better than what I expected to come. Congratulations.

we have three antennas in Hamburg covering the port, the info is available in realtime. Since we can't push the updates to the iPhone (like we do in Fleetmon on the web), you have to poll it with the update button.

your iPhone will display up to 500 vessels in the selected region (for example placing the view in between Rotterdam and Antwerp gives you this amount). We meassured this as a practical limit for older phones and would like to here some feedback in our forum.

Sture you have 99 entries available now. I enabled this amount now for all of our AIS sharers.
We are still in beta test with the performance of the feature, so go ahead and use it heavily :-)

(At least the Telepolis story is based on his work I guess)

We will indeed have a lot work to define the exact boundaries for all the covered ports.
For now this is an automatic calculation, which narrows Ship-Position to the nearest City with more than 5000 inhabitants in a radius of 25km. This will produce some faults in the naming, but gives at least a good idea (verbally), where the vessel is located. Area / Zone alerts will be the next step.

Thanks to all members in this little contest!

No Problem, for the ones with fresh contracts (if you pay the rate...) , the new unlocked iPhones are indeed very expensive. I got mine here:
http://cgi.ebay.de/APPLE-IPHONE-3GS-3G-S-32GB-EU-WARE-UNLOCKED-SCHWARZ_W0QQitemZ120439720186QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDE_Handys_ohne_Vertrag_KM?hash=item1c0ac448fa&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|293%3A1|294%3A30

But I have to say: this is the best Phone I ever used, after trying almost every high class phone on the market. Forget about Sony, HTC, Samsung etc. This is just human interface perfectness. Of course I instantly wanted to have the Fleetmon software on this phone too. The result is (I think) just outstanding.

Quick translation

Why from yesterday (20.08.09) most of the ships from region of Gdansk Harbor and Shipyard have disappeared? That was very useful information to me. I'm using marinetraffic.com .

And now a replay :-)
I'm not quite sure what you are talking about - marine traffic or digital-seas page. If you mean digital-seas then at the moment coverage of port of Gdansk is limited. For the recent few days we had good propagation in region of S Baltic and vessels from Gdansk could be visible by my receiver. Unfortunately propagation is down again. I'm working on installing new receiver that will cover Gdansk, but since I'm out of country that will not happen this month (possibly in the end of September). As for Marine-traffic there is another sharer from Gdynia that covers Gdansk nicely. If he had switched off his receiver then reception of that area is limited.

and now the same in polish:
Jesli operator ja wylaczyl, wowczas zasieg mogl sie ograniczyc.

Regards / Pozdrawiam

Seems like Ports is a new -beta- addition. I have checked only ports in Poland - Gdynia and Gdansk. They both are close one to other, but it looks like their boundaries are defined wrong. Looks like a limit between those two is set on 54°33'N where it should be rather 54°29'N. This way vessels in port of Gdynia would actually be visible on Gdynia tab. Overall I like this new addition. Keep on good job.

All the green charts are just imagery created with a statistic package. we've got the plan to show these statistics for every source (port) on DS, but this is rather low prio right now. Maybe we can create a link to just your images...

Yes, but my problem disappeared. There was about 24 hours break in displaying information of the vessels near port of Gdansk, Poland and nearby shipyards. Now everything is normal. It is very useful website for me: marinetraffic.com, My regards, Maciej Peszkowski, Gdansk, Poland

I don't know if it will be possible in the future that people who are sharing can login to a page to see their share.
You have now 2 antennashares from Antwerp and I like to monitor if both are working good. working now on a third and even a fourth installation.

MindOpen,

Can you see what data that you're receiving from Antwerp.
Don't know what's happening but seems that my receiver is not full working anymore.

The other Antwerp receiver is working fine.

Not everybody is allowed to take photos from the place they would like, also please consider that some piers are located in flat lands, many times the best shot is not possible. The most important thing is the intention to take the photos by their own and save it into digital-seas.

It's very, very pity that some members upload only parts of the ships, only bow or stern section, only obstucted ships, long distance shots, only pats of the vessels, e.g. the propeller or rudder blade.
I think there should be allowed only full vessels, clear to be seen and to be identified, same as in Shipspotting.

Translation:

I appreciate this Service very much and just uploaded a couple of Pictures i done last years, i have much more, but some of the Vessels are not in the Database yet.

As a Service Engineer, travelling nearly daily to Ships and Yards, onboard, i am happy to have this accurate Info, because i know where the Ships i have to go to now are and if they will be here in Time :-)

Next Week i will be in Tuzla, Turkey again for Service, i keep on shooting, we find some more :-)

In two Weeks i will be in South Korea, Ulsan again at Hyundai Shipyard, most big Yard there, expect to have some more good Shots from me.

I wonder when we can add Vessels, which are still not in Database...?

Thanks for this, every time i am underway i take Photos of all Ships around and keep uploading :-)

Hello again

Receiver has been off-line for 3 weeks. Computer has lost internet connection, and since I'm still away (for another 2.5 months) I couldn't fix that. Now fortunately Internet is back on and there should be AIS data flowing from Gdynia 24/7 again. Sorry for that interruption.

I'm the one to share data from this region. You have made significant mistake though - there are two ports close one to another: Gdansk and Gdynia - on this page in port list if you click Gdansk it is actually pointing to port of Gdynia and Gdynia is not on the list at all. It would be great if you could correct that.
Thanks

Yes Käpt'n, You are right Sir! Thanks for correcting.
There is always confusion between the different Gorch Focks (33, 58).
In 2008 only one is sailing, "Gorch Fock II" (1958):

<a href="http://www.digital-seas.com/vessel_search/vessel_details/on/drax_gorch_fock_q211210280_0.html" target="_new" rel="nofollow">www.digital-seas.com/vessel_search/vessel_details/on/drax_gorch_fock_q211210280_0.html</a>

So, the text-link shouldn't point to Stralsund here.
On the kay there lays the "Gorch Fock I" (1933) ex "Tovarishch".
Since they are daughter ships anyway, I decide to leave it the way :-)
Almost anything about Tall-Ships is written by <a href="http://www.digital-seas.com/open_space/user_detail/username/-f7bb0e89d6.html" rel="nofollow">Volker Gries</a> on his great site:

Best tip for hunting tall-ship info! Lars

Hi Sailors!

There is a little mistake in this article. The visitor at the Hanse Sail 2008 wasn't the first "Gorch Fock" from 1933, it was the second "Gorch Fock" from 1958. The First Gorch Fock is in Stralsund since 2003.

Gorch Fock I <a href="http://www.gorchfock1.de/" target="_new" rel="nofollow">www.gorchfock1.de/</a>

Gorch Fock II <a href="http://www.gorchfock.de/" target="_new" rel="nofollow">www.gorchfock.de/</a>

It is easily possible if you can add html code to your profile.
Just copy the code from here and paste it into any description/edit field on gcaptain.
Have not checked out the site myself. We can continue the evaluation inside our brand new Forum-section for widgets: http://forum.digital-seas.com/forum/widgets

It's not that loud in real. The micro of my N93 just lies. :)
To get a more stable picture I've to fly smoother. For better quality I have to mount a better cam on the plane, which means more weight. Give me something about ~350 gramms and I'll mount it.

I don't think that it is a problem to fly over water. I'm sure that no one even notice the plane ... - I (the pilot) need eagle eyes to not lose visual contact to the plane in the blue sky, because looking to long in the sky brings small moving points on the iris - you know what I mean? :)

Best regars, Thomas

Hello Team Digital Seas,
thank you for this blog and asking. In my opinion the application is ok. I'm not the "power user" and following I'd say please keep it as simple and stable as possible. The server is sometimes realy slow. Also there might be some wishes to improve the "maintaining area" for ship records. I think we talked about this earlier. Of course always interesting but not easy is to see the traffic of further sea regions. Also I hope many other ship lovers support you with photos and information. Everybody can take profit from this help.
Yesterday I had some problems switching through the different port areas (Hamburg, Rostock, Aalborg, ...). Rostock was not available anymore? Today everything works well again.
Thank you again

This stuff is to loud and heavy for me. How would it be possible to get a more stable picture, with better quality? Is it allowed in Germany to fly over the water like this?
Well done site anyway. Regards, Alex.
